Nothing wins more than a good idea — it is the pipeline of possibilities every business grows from. But good ideas come from people, not from tools, budgets, or AI. The organisations that innovate are not the ones with the best enablers; they are the ones whose people still tell each other the truth under pressure. That capability is unfashionable, largely unmeasured, and about to become decisive.

Over more than thirty years in industry and consulting, I have watched organisations succeed, stagnate, recover, and quietly come apart. The symptoms are remarkably consistent. The innovative edge fades. The best people leave first. Problems arrive late instead of early. Meetings become safer while decisions become poorer. For years I could describe the symptoms but not the mechanism. This essay is the result of finally finding the language for what I had been seeing all along.
